Many of us remember the days our parents or caretakers used to sit us down to style our hair. Those formative moments were a mixture of laughter, bonding, and even slight torture. (I have one too many memories of wincing in anticipation every time my mom brought a hot tool near my head.) The experiences can also be teachable moments — not just for the kids, but for the adults, too. Just ask Jamir Grigsby, whose mother recently walked him through braiding his daughter Amirah‘s hair. The 27-year-old father recorded the styling session and shared it to Twitter on July 12.
“My mom giving me a tutorial on how to braid my daughter’s hair…lol Imma keep y’all updated when I finally get it down…😂✊🏽,” the caption reads. As he braids, you can hear his mother, Tonnette, instructing him.
The video starts with Grigsby detangling a section of Amirah’s hair before he begins to cornrow. He checks in with his mom as he braids to make sure he’s doing the right thing. Through the whole process, you hear Tonnette instructing and affirming him, saying things like, “There you go. Just like that.” While we don’t see the finished look, we do get to see Grigsby complete one braid as far as the middle of Amirah’s head.
Grigsby shared that he wanted to start learning how to do his daughter’s hair to give his wife a break from time to time. He’s even been practicing a few different techniques, like how to wash and style her hair into a ponytail. He tells Allure, “It’s a great time to bond with your daughter. It changes the narrative in society because it should be OK for dads to do their daughter’s hair!” His hope is that more dads will follow suit and learn a few hair-care and styling techniques for their children.
This intergenerational bonding is something very special and important. We can’t wait to see what other tutorials they share.
