Despite the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to affect life in New York City, New York Fashion Week is still happening. Runway shows for the spring/summer 2021 season are taking place from September 13 to 17 with strict safety protocols mandated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in place. Instead of having spectators, most of the shows are being streamed online. Some, however, are taking place outside with socially distanced audiences of less than 50 people. And as far as Allure is concerned, our editors aren’t going backstage for NYFW to find out exactly how the beauty looks are being created. Interviews with the beauty teams have moved to Zoom to limit the amount of people backstage.
Because models are constantly taking off and putting on their masks and protective face coverings, the lead makeup artists for the fashion shows are also making sure their looks are fit for the challenge. Erin Parsons, for example, speckled on faux freckles with long-wearing liquid lipstick and slicked on a simple lip balm for Jason Wu. Hairstylists are limiting the amount of contact they make with models, too. Overall, the looks have become simpler and quicker to achieve than seasons past.
Despite the hurdles COVID-19 has presented for NYFW this month, the beauty professionals backstage are still presenting the same levels of incredible artistry. They have put together stunning hair and makeup looks that we’re adding to our mood boards and recreating from the comfort of our homes — just as we do every season.
