Interview: How Rosalía Helped Create MAC’s New Viva Glam Lipstick

Every year, makeup lovers look forward to one of the industry’s biggest reveals: the latest MAC Viva Glam lipstick and its ambassador. Although the world looks a bit different right now, nothing can alter the enthusiasm for this 26-year tradition — especially since the always-gorgeous lip color and star-studded announcement is complemented by Viva Glam’s philanthropic mission. And this year, it’s Barcelona-born singer-songwriter Rosalía, who’s joining the famous Viva Glam fam.

Rosalía could not be more excited about the opportunity. “When I used to experiment with makeup, I didn’t even know what I was doing. I was just having fun with my sister. We used to use my mom’s makeup,” she tells Allure exclusively. “When I was a teenager, I used to do my makeup for my shows, and getting ready was a ritual. That’s part of my memory with makeup, and I have always been a fan of MAC.”

The riveting performer and producer was a clear choice for Viva Glam ambassador. “The Grammy Award-winning artist has established herself globally as a unique, dynamic feminist who inspires self-expression and represents creativity and individuality — all values that are core to MAC’s Viva Glam mission,” the brand said in a statement.

That mission sees 100 percent of the lipstick selling price go toward fighting for equal rights for women, girls, and the LGBTQ+ community, all the while maintaining what it may be best known for: decades-long support for those living with HIV/AIDS.
