One of my “beats” here at Allure is reporting on when a celebrity has dramatically changed their look, whether it’s a new hair color or cut, a nude lipstick when they’re known for red, or a new tattoo. And it seems to happen more than ever, with very few stars sticking to a signature look for years, let alone decades. One exception, however, is Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Zeta-Jones found a stunning look that worked for her sometime in the last century and hasn’t strayed from it, only modernizing it a bit along the way. Her long, dark hair is basically… well… always long and dark, and her makeup nearly always involves sultrily lined eyes. So when the Oscar winner announced she was launching a makeup line, it did not surprise me in the least that she kicked it off with eyeliner and mascara.
In case you didn’t know, Catherine Zeta-Jones has a lifestyle brand called Casa Zeta-Jones, in which she sells the cutest little shoes and seems to have several other categories in the works, like coffee, activewear, and home decor. Earlier this summer, the actor announced her makeup launch in cahoots with Wunder2, with whom she collaborated to create My Mascara and Eye Contact Long-Lasting Pencil Eyeliner ($18) in two shades.
I was genuinely surprised to find that the two shades did not include black, the color I assumed was Zeta-Jones’s go-to. Instead, they’re Beach Bronze, a brown-leaning copper, and Gilda Gold. Both have a noticeably radiant finish — you can see it just by looking at the pencil’s tip — and I quickly found that it made for a subtly glamorous look after the incredibly easy application.
I applied Beach Bronze to my upper lash line, going a little thick toward my outer corner, and it glided on like a dream. I was worried that the temptation to smudge would be strong, but I was able to create a precise shape that tapered in toward my inner corner. I decided to use the much lighter-colored Gilda Gold along my lower lash line, and the metallic finish read like expertly-placed eye shadow.
