Every now and then, while mindlessly scrolling through a myriad of highly-involved makeup looks on Instagram, we’ll come across one that stands out due to its simple-but-powerful nature. Today, it happened to be a bright-yellow look inspired by bananas, of all things, done by Paz Sykes, a makeup artist known for her bold creations. As it turns out, we aren’t the only ones who love the look — now, other MUAs are following in Skyes’ footsteps and experimenting with their own iterations of the fruit-themed makeup. That’s right, folks: The humble banana has officially inspired a beauty trend, and frankly, we love it.
As far as what prompted Sykes to try the look in the first place, she tells Allure it came down having the desire to step back and get more in touch with herself and her surroundings. “When the quarantine started, I thought about doing thousands of complicated looks, which could take me hours, and I was very concerned about being super-productive,” she says in an email. “But then I said, ‘Stop, it’s not about that — it’s about slowing down, becoming simpler, easier. It’s about looking around you and connecting with nature and with yourself.’ So that was my inspiration: the simple, the everyday.”
Sykes used just four products to achieve the look: a creamy yellow pigment on her lids for the ultimate banana-like feel, a touch of mascara for definition, eyeliner used for faux freckles (which served as the banana’s spots), and brow gel to slick up her arches. Most of her other makeup looks are meticulously detailed, so this was definitely a change of pace for her.
Shortly after Sykes’ post went up, other banana-themed makeup looks started popping up on the social media platform. Just check out the #bananamakeup hashtag to see what we mean. While all of them are spectacular in their own way, there are definitely some that stand out more than others. Below, find a bunch of our favorites — then try the look for yourself.
